Afterglow (Bright Year Day 2)

There is baklava left over, thank the Lord.  My wife Christina made a large pan of it, so that there’s about half of the trapezoids left, even after eating our unnatural portions yesterday.  I love the way the honey and juices mature at the bottom of baklava while the top stays on the crisp side.  As good as yesterday?  Maybe not.  But almost.

The afterglow of Easter is evident in our house.  Joining the baklava, there is lamb, pita, hummus, spanakopita, baby potatoes, baba ganouj.  With a  little luck someone hasn’t scarfed all the tabouli.  Going Mediterranean is our Easter tradition; eating Mediterranean dinner for breakfast the morning after is not out of bounds.

In the morning light the list of leftovers goes on.  Easter baskets are out, strewn with Reese’s and Robins Eggs.  Remnants of presents lurk about.  Yesterday’s gifts are in the living room, having been given an initial play session.  Shreds of wrapping paper lay about like the linen cloths, just more dispersed.  The boxes are empty.

Easter is too big to hold in to Easter Sunday.  The beautiful mess should signify that, spilling over into the week.

We’ll clean up eventually and make more sense of it all.  Just not yet.

Bright Year is a series exploring how the good news of Jesus’ resurrection shines over every day of the year. Read the series introduction for more.
